Meta Develops Decentralised Social Media App to Compete With Twitter
The new platform, codenamed P92, will reportedly be an offshoot of Instagram and compatible with ActivityPub.

Facebook's parent company, Meta, is reportedly developing a decentralised social media platform designed to compete with Twitter. The new platform, codenamed P92, will reportedly be an offshoot of Instagram and compatible with ActivityPub, the decentralised protocol used by the open-source Twitter alternative, Mastodon.
As a decentralised platform, P92 will enable users to join or create separate servers and broadcast posts to people on other servers. The app is expected to have a feature set similar to Twitter at launch, except for commenting on posts and messages, which will be added later.
P92 will leverage existing Instagram data, such as names, profile photos, and followers, for users who sign up for the decentralised platform and those who don't. The app will also be accessible using the same login credentials as Instagram.
Meta's move towards decentralisation comes after significant changes to Twitter following Elon Musk's takeover. While it remains to be seen how successful P92 will be in competing with Twitter, the move towards decentralisation could signal a significant shift in the social media landscape worldwide.
